Skyline NADAC Agility May 21 and 22, 2011, St. Huberts, Chatham, NJ

This is the second trial of the season for Scraps and Rags.  As Scraps is beginning to peek-out and is running really well with Kathy. Rags on the other hand is still overwhelmed by the whole experience and wants to do nothing but leave the ring, it being only the second trial of her life.  With classes starting at this St Huberts field at  for both Scraps and Rags in a couple of weeks,  hopefully Scraps can hone his skills while Rags gets over her fears and learns to have fun with me with agility

We have one more trial before class starts, so unless I some how get some additional training in for Rags before the trial we will continue on with the technique I started on Day 2 of this weekend’s trial, which is to get her through a few obstacles to finish a course to make rewarding at the end a worthwhile experience.  After Rags bolted out of the ring prior to completing anything, I took this sage advice and have some hope and confidence that it will work.

Scraps on the other-hand was really running well.  Qualifying in his first elite runs Scraps is really coming into his own.  The whole new technique of running with the dog using little hand gestures and vocalization has really helped in focusing Scraps on the obstacle ahead.  In addition, the use of “switch” in his vocabulary has really paid dividends.  He is running considerably better than he was at this time last year.

This was really nice weather for a weekend of running in trials.  Saturday was sunny and nice and had just a quick rain shower during the 5th run of the day.  Sunday was overcast the whole day but never rained.  While there was a little chill to the air it was perfect for not tiring the dogs out.  Don’t tell Rags that.

Scraps – Elite Proficient 12″ – Qualifying 3rd Place -10 points and 0 course faults – 36.28 seconds (37.68 SCT)

Rags – Novice Enthusiast 4″ – With Rags’ runs being so miserable throughout the day, we decided to let Kathy have a try at it.  The results were even worse, instead of going through one obstacle and stopping, she just bee-lined for the exit and it was over.

I took relatively few photos during the trial.  I was preoccupied with Rags and Barry Rosen was taking photos, which you can see here, which are better than mine, so you might as well check those out.  Nevertheless, Day one was sunny and nice and gave me good light for the photos, but I had a auto-focus setting incorrectly set, so not everything was as crisp as it could have been.    On Day 2 I corrected the issue but the light didn’t agree with me.  so the pictures are dark and gloomy, but in sharp focus.
